(Detailed Explanation)

English:

In the previous verse (7.16), Krishna described the four kinds of virtuous devotees — the distressed, the seeker, the one who seeks wealth, and the man of wisdom. Now in this verse He reveals why the jñānī stands highest among these four. And the answer He gives is one of the most tender and most heart-moving statements in the entire Gita.

'Teṣāṁ jñānī nitya-yukta eka-bhaktir viśiṣyate':

Krishna identifies the jñānī's supremacy through two qualities — 'nitya-yukta' and 'eka-bhakti.'

'Nitya-yukta' — nitya meaning always, and yukta meaning united, absorbed. The jñānī is one who remains connected to the Divine at all times — not only during worship, not only in meditation, not only in crisis. For him, the Divine and life are not two separate things. In the marketplace — the Divine. In family — the Divine. In solitude — the Divine. In every moment, in every condition, he remains united.

The other three — the ārta, the jijñāsu, the arthārthī — turn toward the Divine for a specific reason, at a specific time. The ārta comes in crisis, the jijñāsu comes when questions arise, the arthārthī comes when need appears. But the jñānī never leaves — for him, separation from the Divine is simply not possible.

'Eka-bhakti' — eka meaning one alone, and bhakti meaning love and surrender. The jñānī's devotion is undivided — it is not for any result, it is not mixed with any other desire. Like a lamp whose flame burns perfectly straight and still — unmoved by wind, uninclined in any direction — so too is the jñānī's devotion fixed in the Divine alone. And this is what 'viśiṣyate' — makes him the highest.

'Priyo hi jñānino'tyartham ahaṁ sa ca mama priyaḥ':

And then Krishna says what makes this verse — and indeed this entire passage of Chapter 7 — profoundly moving.

"I am 'atyartham' — exceedingly, immeasurably — dear to the jñānī. And he is dear to Me."

This is a statement of mutual love — and that is what makes it so unique. Krishna is not only saying that the jñānī loves Him — He is also saying that He loves the jñānī. The Divine Himself is saying — "He is My beloved."

This statement has the power to move the heart of any seeker. That we love the Divine — that is understandable. But that the Divine loves us — hearing this is an entirely different experience. And Krishna is not speaking of ordinary love — He says 'atyartham' — exceedingly, beyond measure, in a way that surpasses all ordinary expression.

A question naturally arises — does the Divine have special love for some over others? Is He partial? No. The Divine's love is universal — He loves all. But what is unique about the jñānī is this — the distance between the jñānī and the Divine disappears. The ārta, the jijñāsu, the arthārthī — they come to the Divine, but the distinction of 'I' and 'You' remains. In the jñānī, that distinction dissolves. And when the distinction dissolves, the love that emerges is unlike any other love. It no longer remains love — it becomes oneness.

'Sa ca mama priyaḥ' — "And he is dear to Me." In this sentence, Krishna is claiming the jñānī as His own. This is not merely an emotional statement — it is a spiritual truth. The jñānī is an extension of the Divine — and when the Divine perceives His own extension, He calls it 'beloved.' Just as a mother looks at her child and says — "This is mine, this is dear to me" — in that same spirit, the Divine calls the jñānī beloved.

In essence, this verse proclaims a profound and moving truth — the jñānī is the highest devotee not because he knows the most, but because his love is single-pointed and his union is perpetual. And in this perpetual single-pointed love, the Divine Himself is so drawn that He declares the jñānī His own beloved. This is the highest peak of love — where the line between the devotee and the Divine begins to fade.
